FEBRUARY REQUEST TO SUBSCRIBE TO NIXLE
In the February issue of the Village Newsletter, residents were asked to subscribe to an emergency messaging system the Village uses. Following that request, 74 additional residents subscribed to receive emergency messages via text and 17 subscribed to receive emergency messages via email. Approximately 308 people are now subscribed to receive alerts from Pleasant Prairie during emergencies. As a point of reference, the Village has approximately 7,500 occupied residences and businesses.
TEST MESSAGE SENT IN MARCH
A test message was sent to Nixle subscribers on Sunday, March 4 at 9:00 a.m. If you had subscribed to Nixle prior to March 4 but did not receive the test message, you can login with your username and password at Nixle.com and select the "Settings" tab. There, ensure that the box to the left of "Village of Pleasant Prairie" is checked. This will indicated that you are subscribed to receive emergency messages from Pleasant Prairie. If you have additional questions related to subscribing to Nixle, you can reach Nixle Support at [email protected].
USING NIXLE TO REACH RESIDENTS DURING EMERGENCIES
When an emergency situation or weather event occurs in the Village, it's important to be able to reach residents with relevant public safety information. Pleasant Prairie uses a service called Nixle that allows public safety officials to send text messages to subscribers in the event of a public safety emergency.
Since June of 2011, the Village has sent 22 messages to subscribers through Nixle. Messages sent by the Village have advised subscribers of: snow emergencies; a flooding and evacuation advisory; an outbreak of thefts from vehicles; an oversized load being transported through the Village; two searches for individuals; and downed trees and power lines.
SUBSCRIBING
Signing up to receive emergency alerts through Nixle is free; there is no charge to subscribe. In order to receive emergency messages via text or email, visit Nixle.com and click the "Sign Up Free!" button; then read and follow the directions you see there. Don't forget to indicate that you'd like to receive emergency messages from Pleasant Prairie.
You can also subscribe to Nixle via text. Simply text your zip code to 888777. Read the text reply you receive from Nixle and reply back to Nixle as requested. Village staff will send a test message through Nixle on the morning of April 8 to help you know if you're registration has been successful.
OTHER METHODS OF CONTACT
Other methods the Village currently uses to communicate with residents during an emergency situation include: PleasantPrairieOnline.com, Channel 25 on Time Warner Cable, Channel 99 on AT&T U-Verse, local media outlets, and Twitter. You can find the Village on Twitter by searching "Pleasant Prairie" and opting to follow "PlPrairieWi." You can also follow the Pleasant Prairie Police Department at "PPPD."
During severe emergency situations another means used to alert residents is a reverse 911 call. While the reverse 911 call is available for use during an elevated crisis situation, the system relies on an older land (telephone) line based technology. As more people opt to abandon their land lines, Nixle will provide an efficient alternative for emergency communication in a very time and cost effective format.
