On Tuesday, May 28, the Pleasant Prairie Plan Commission considered and approved Final Site and Operational Plans for Meijer Distribution, Inc. Meijer purchased property, located on State Highway 31 in the Village of Pleasant Prairie, that had been used as a wholesale grocery distribution center by SuperValu. In January of 2013, Meijer sought and received approval of preliminary plans to begin mass grading and install footings and foundations at the site.
On May 28, Meijer received approval of final plans to construct a 245,792 square foot expansion at the property. Plans call for the addition to be constructed on the north side of the existing building of a similar exterior material. The expansion will house a High Bay Automated Storage and Retrieval System in addition to an office support area for the storage and retrieval system and associated truck docks. The existing facilities include: office space, a dry grocery warehouse, a refrigerated warehouse, a tractor/trailer maintenance and service building, a guard house, energy center and fueling station.
The facility is expected to operate 24 hours per day, seven days per week with varying degrees of activity. Meijer anticipates their operations at the center will begin in April of 2014. Once operational, the facility is expected to employ 522 full-time positions and 42 part-time positions (including third party labor). Truck traffic is projected to make an average 320 trips per day with the potential for future trips to average 480 per day with 624 trips at peak times.
