During May, Village Engineer Mike Spence was presented with a Patriot Award. The award recognizes employers who support employee participation in the National Guard and Military Reserve. Spence received the award from the ESGR (Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve), an organization operating under the Department of Defense.

Village Engineering Technician Eric Cunado, who serves with the United States Navy Reserve, nominated Spence for the Award. Cunado explained during the presentation that, as his supervisor, Spence showed support for Cunado's military service in both word and action, an example being Spence's flexibility in scheduling work within the department around Cunado's military commitments.
