RECPLEX AQUA ARENA OFFERS TOURISM BOOST AND GREAT EXPERIENCE FOR SWIMMERS
During March, the 2016 Speedo Sectionals were held in the RecPlex Aqua Arena. A nationally recognized event, the meet hosted 108 teams with a total of 705 swimmers. Including swimmers, coaches, trainers, officials and spectators, nearly 2,600 people attended this single event, with a majority of teams traveling from greater than 50 miles away.
"The meet hosted some of the best young swimmers in the country who were hoping to post a fast time in order to qualify for Olympic trials this summer," explained Kevin Milak, Aquatics and Competitive Swimming Director at RecPlex. "The aqua arena at RecPlex has become known for its fast times. Both local swimmers and those farther away seek that out in order to advance their standings." Eight swimmers qualified for Olympic trials during the meet, with a total of 18 qualifying times.
The 50-meter competition pool at RecPlex was constructed during 2009 and 2010 to meet USA Swimming certification standards with the goal of hosting larger, high-level competitive swimming events in addition to serving the local community by providing opportunities for lap lane swimming, expanded swimming lessons, triathlon training programs, indoor triathlons and more. Over the course of one year, the pool has hosted approximately 22,000 swimmers, with RecPlex and Prairie Springs Park overall welcoming about 1,852,000 visitors (both local and from out of the area) per year.
"Competitions at the pool have offered a real boost in tourism spending in the area as local businesses provide convenience services and goods to swimmers and their families," explained Milak. "The impact in tourism dollars from hotel stays, retail visits and restaurant spending has been substantial. The Speedo meet alone had an estimated economic impact of $362,475."
Mike Pollocoff, Village Administrator added, "The pool has been a great investment for the community in many ways. The economic impact has been wonderful, but even more impressive are the efforts of the young people that come here to compete both individually and as a team. These kids are committed to giving their all and doing their very personal best. These swimmers are learning perseverance and teamwork, and they are working very hard in pursuit of their goals. I'd like to congratulate these young swimmers and encourage them to keep pursuing their goals."
