On June 18, 2007 the Pleasant Prairie Village Board adopted a resolution to change the name of the Prairie Springs Ball Park to Veterans Memorial Ball Park. The Village began construction of a new Veterans Memorial inside the park in June of this year in tribute to the men and women who have served our Country in all branches of the armed forces.
Construction of the memorial will conclude with a dedication ceremony on Sunday, August 5, 2007 at the site. The site is located immediately to the east of the ball field pavilion on the south side of the park (adjacent to Hwy 165). The site was chosen because it is an area that will be accessible to many visitors to the park and will hopefully facilitate more discussion and understanding of the value of the sacrifices made by our past and present service men and women.
The design of the memorial offers visitors a seating area surrounding a landscaped display of plaques representing each branch of the service. The display is guarded over by a bank of flags. Benches and bricks will be engraved with tributes loved ones and those who have served in our country's armed forces.
Memorial bricks and benches will be made available on an annual basis until there are no more spaces. One more dedication, in addition to the one taking place on August 5, is expected to take place later this year, on Veteran's Day Sunday, November 11th. The project, which is part of the Village's Comprehensive Master Plan, will be funded with donations. Donations have been collected since 2001 to support the memorial. Any donations collected over and above the cost of the project will be used to maintain and make improvements to the memorial.
