Digital Television Conversion takes place in February 2009. The Digital Television and Public Safety Act of 2005 requires that all television broadcasters in the US switch to digital transmission of television signals by midnight on February 17, 2009. This means that in little under a year, residents who rely on over-the-air broadcast channels for television service will need to take action in order to continue to receive television signals.

If you subscribe to a cable or satellite television service or have a digital tuner in your television set, you should not be affected by the switch. If you rely on over-the-air broadcasts and wish to continue receiving television service after the conversion date, three options are available:

• You can purchase a new digital-to-analog converter box. These are now available in most major electronics stores. You can request a coupon worth $40 to be used towards the purchase of a new converter box;
• You can subscribe to a cable or satellite television service; or
• You can purchase a new television set with a built-in digital tuner.

If you have a television in your home that receives over-the-air broadcasts, you are encouraged to apply for your converter box coupons now. Each household can apply for up to two coupons. Requests must be received by March 31, 2009, and coupons will be valid for 90 days from the date they are mailed.
