During August of 2010, LakeView RecPlex and the Kenosha Barracuda Swim Team (BST) will welcome more than 700 swimmers from five Midwestern states to the area for the USA Swimming Central Zone Age Group Championships. The meet will take place August 6 through August 9 and will be held in the new competition pool currently under construction at RecPlex. Competitors in the Central Zone Championship are ages 14 and younger. They must qualify for the competition by meeting high-level entry time standards.

USA Swimming, which is the governing body for competitive swimming across the country, is the group responsible for selecting the Olympic swim team as well as other teams that represent the United States. Across the country, USA Swimming has identified four separate Zones. The Central Zone encompasses fifteen states, five of which will be competing in the August meet at RecPlex. The five states include: Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio and Wisconsin. BST will be the host club for the meet. BST Coach Luke Schumm commented, "Last year's Central Zone coach indicated that RecPlex is the perfect venue for these high level championship events. The event requires a 50-meter pool with spectator seating, along with an open water venue. If you take RecPlex and Lake Andrea and then consider the hotel space, restaurants and shopping, all within a short drive, the site is a perfect match."

In June of 2009, RecPlex began construction of a new 50-meter, Olympic-size pool. The competition pool is scheduled for completion in June of this year. The pool is being constructed to meet the standards set forth by USA Swimming for pool certification. The Village has chosen to construct the pool to USA Swimming certification standards with the goal of being considered for larger, high-level competitive swimming events. In addition to accommodating competitive swimming events, the new pool at RecPlex will serve the local community by providing opportunities for: lap lane swimming for members and guests, expanded swimming lessons, triathlon training programs, indoor triathlons and more. The pool will have seating for approximately 600 spectators.

"Competitions at the pool are expected to offer a boost in tourism spending as area businesses provide convenience services and goods to swimmers and their families," commented Carol Willke, Director of Recreation for the Village of Pleasant Prairie. "The impact in tourism dollars from hotel stays, retail visits and restaurant spending is expected to be substantial." During late 2009, the Wisconsin Department of Tourism awarded the Kenosha Area Convention and Visitor's Bureau a $9,950 "Ready, Set, Go" grant to help bring the event and its swimmers to the area. Ready, Set, Go grants support the establishment of competitive sporting events in the State.
