A new addition during 2009, the Fleet Internal Service Fund performed well during its first year. Under the new fund, vehicles and equipment used by Public Works, Parks, Engineering, and the four utilities were consolidated under one management system. This new equipment pool was created to streamline the sharing of equipment among Village departments. Under the new structure, maintenance and replacement costs are factored into a pay-per-use system for each of the participating Village departments. The pay-per-use system makes the Village set money aside for future needs in order to avoid borrowing to purchase equipment.
During its first year, the Fleet Internal Service Fund has built a solid base of funds to begin funding vehicle replacements. The fund also helped the Village to better estimate hours spent maintaining the fleet. A majority of equipment and vehicle maintenance is performed in-house by Village employees. In 2010, the Fleet Internal Service Fund will purchase three garbage truck bodies, a leaf collector, two pickup trucks, a replacement Parks vehicle and minor attachments and tools. The Fund will be able to make the 2010 purchases without incurring debt.
