A property owner has the ultimate responsibility for the safety of their family, tenants, or children in their care. A new federal law will go into effect this April. The law requires contractors that disturb lead-based paint in homes, child care facilities and schools, built before 1978 to be certified and follow specific work practices to prevent lead contamination. Beginning in April of 2010, if you fall within the category above, ask to see your contractor's certification. Contractors should also provide homeowners and tenants with a copy of an informational brochure entitled "Renovate Right" before starting work.
