CHANGES MADE AFFECT SIZES FOR UNLIMITED COLLECTION AND BULK ITEM PICKUP
AUTOMATED GARBAGE COLLECTION
Since its introduction in the Village, the automated garbage collection program has helped staff keep pace with a growing number of residential collections in an efficient and safe manner. The Public Works Department has recently purchased three replacement garbage trucks. The new trucks offer improved reliability for staff as they keep pace with their daily collection schedule. The purchase of the new garbage collection trucks has made it necessary to update the collection practices for "unlimited garbage collection."
HOW AND WHEN UNLIMITED GARBAGE COLLECTION WILL CHANGE
The new garbage trucks no longer have an opening at street level that would allow operators to throw items directly into the vehicle. Once the new trucks are in service, after emptying the garbage cart, operators will need to physically place any additional garbage bags or bundles inside the garbage cart, in order for the mechanical arm to then dump the contents into the opening at the top of the truck.
Previous instructions stated that all items placed curbside for unlimited collection must be smaller than four feet in length and less than 50 pounds. Items placed curbside for unlimited collection must now be small enough to fit inside the garbage cart. Bundled material for collection (including cardboard for recycling) must now be no more than 3 feet in length and no more than 18 inches wide. They must still weigh less than 50 pounds. The new rules will be in effect beginning the week of May 24.
BULK ITEM SIZE CHANGES
For those items that are larger than 3 feet by 18 inches and which weigh more than 50 pounds, Bulk Item Pickup is still available. Bulk Items are considered any item longer than 3 feet in length and 18 inches in width, which weigh more than 50 pounds. Some examples are: furniture, mattresses and swing sets.
To schedule a Bulk Item Pickup, please call the Public Works Department at 262/925-6700 by noon on Tuesday to schedule a pickup for the following day, Wednesday. There is a $25 fee for Bulk Item Pickup. If you need to cancel your pickup, please call by noon on the Tuesday prior to your scheduled pickup. Any pickup not canceled by 4:00 p.m. the day prior to pickup will be charged the $25 collection fee.
Bulk Items may also be dropped off at the Compost Drop Off Site (8600 Green Bay Road) during open hours for a $10 fee. For more information, please see page 8 of your 2010 Village Calendar or visit PleasantPrairieOnline.com. Disassembling bulk items to smaller than 3 feet by 18 inches, and fewer than 50 pounds, enables you to dispose of them as solid waste.
