The RecPlex Aqua Arena recently welcomed more than 850 swimmers from fifteen states for the Speedo Champions Series Central Zone Section 1 Spring Championships from Thursday, March 8 to Sunday, March 11. The Series showcased some of the top swimming talent from around the country, including teams from Harvard University, UW-Madison, Mesa (Arizona), and Denver.
Competitors in the Speedo Meet must qualify for the competition by meeting high-level entry time standards. From the Speedo meet, those with qualifying times will proceed to national level competition, and beyond that lies the possibility of Olympic trials. Approximately six of the competitors at the Speedo event qualified to proceed. Carol Willke, Director of Recreation in Pleasant Prairie commented, "We were truly impressed with the swimmers and their families and coaches. It was a wonderful event and we'd like to thank the Lake Forest Swim Club and the Patriots for hosting the event."
Events, such as the Speedo meet, have a significant impact on the tourism industry in the area. Off peak events have a positive impact on area hotels, restaurants, and retail businesses. The annual impact in tourism dollars from hotel stays, retail visits and restaurant spending is substantial for sporting and athletic events in the community. The Village and local organizers would like to thank the Lake Forest Swim Club and the Pleasant Prairie Patriots for hosting the Speedo Champions Series, as well as welcome swimmers back for future opportunities to achieve their competitive goals.
