THE NATURE CONSERVANCY WILL BE CONDUCTING A CONTROLLED BURN AT CHIWAUKEE PRAIRIE
Burn Will Help Rejuvenate Natural Area for Wildlife, Native Plants
PLEASANT PRAIRIE - The Nature Conservancy will be conducting a controlled burn at Chiwaukee Prairie in the next two weeks when the weather allows. Anyone who sees or smells smoke in the area should not be alarmed.
Controlled burning is an important and commonly-used tool to maintain and restore natural areas. In Wisconsin, fire prevents brush and trees from overtaking prairie and savanna, prevents the build-up of dead vegetation, helps control the spread of invasive plants and promotes the growth of native plants. Periodic burns improve habitat for native birds, mammals and insects.
The Nature Conservancy has been using fire for more than 35 years in Wisconsin. Burns are undertaken only when weather conditions are suitable for safe burning. Permits are obtained from local offices of the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and the Village of Pleasant Prairie Fire Department. The DNR and local authorities have been notified that this controlled burn will be taking place.
If you have any questions about the burn, please contact Hannah Spaul, Director of Land Management at The Nature Conservancy at 608-251-8140. You can learn more about the benefits of controlled burning at www.nature.org/wisconsinfire.
