HELP US KEEP YOU INFORMED
Register to Receive Public Safety Alerts Via Text or Email
When conditions affecting a portion of the Village create the need for a public safety response, staff does its best to notify residents of protective or subsequent actions they should take, such as avoiding or evacuating an area or taking shelter. The Village also attempts to notify residents when a closure or a delay in services will take place or when residents should clear the streets of vehicles for snow plowing or other safety related operations.
The Village posts these announcements to the main page of PleasantPrairieOnline.com; tweets a link to the announcement via Twitter.com; sends the announcements to local newspaper, radio and television media outlets; and sends a text and/or email through Nixle. When situations warrant, the Village can also request a reverse 911 call through Kenosha County.
Nixle is a service that allows public safety officials to send text messages to subscribers’ smart phones in the event of a public safety emergency such as: a missing child or person, police activity, evacuations, severe weather-related emergencies, and other dangerous situations.
Snow Emergencies (when two or more inches of snow have fallen and cars should not be parked on Village roads) are also announced through Nixle.
As more residents opt to abandon land line telephones, and as the land line based technology ages, services such as Nixle become an even more important means of contacting residents during an emergency. Its effectiveness, however, is dependent upon you, as a resident, registering for the service.
The population in the Village is currently 20,004. As of January 2014, only 175 email addresses and 287 cell phone numbers had registered to receive advisories and alerts from the Village.
In order to receive emergency updates via text message on your telephone and/or via email, please visit Nixle.com and click the “Sign Up Free!” button; then read and follow the directions you see there.
It’s important to use Pleasant Prairie’s zip code 53158 (even if residing in 53143 or 53142) in order to receive Pleasant Prairie’s advisories and alerts. Don’t forget to reply “YES” to Nixle’s text in order to receive emergency messages.
