On Saturday, May 3, the Pleasant Prairie Police Department announced the death of retired K-9 Officer Rico. Born on October 22, 2003 in the Netherlands, Rico was trained for duty in 2004 and joined the Department in 2005. Rico was retired due to medical conditions in 2011. From that point forward, Rico resided with his handler’s family.

During his six years on duty, Rico captured several fugitives, assisted in tracking lost children and elderly subjects, located narcotics, and preformed vehicle searches. Rico was also a steward of public relations and fostered a positive relationship between the Department and residents through many public appearances and K-9 demonstrations.

Police Chief David Smetana commented, “Rico had become a part of our Police family. He worked by our side daily looking only to complete the daily mission of serving the public and keeping the Village safe. I’d like to thank Rico’s family for the care and love they offered our K-9 partner.” Smetana added, “We would also like to thank all those who offer donations to support the Village K-9 program. Your help is critical to the K-9 program and very, very much appreciated.”
