2014 ROAD MAINTENANCE AND PAVING PROJECTS
Work Expected to Begin in June
During April, staff will solicit bids for 2014 road maintenance and paving projects. Once bids have been received and reviewed, the Village Board will consider awarding a contract for the projects. Village paving is expected to begin during June (weather permitting) and to continue through the end of August. This season, the Village has plans to complete six road maintenance and five paving projects. Following are the projects proposed for 2014.
MICRO-SURFACE ROAD MAINTENANCE PROJECTS
Micro-surfacing is not paving. It is an economical treatment for sealing and extending the service life of roadways. Micro-surface is not used to improve or rehabilitate a roadway; it is used to prevent further degradation and to protect the existing asphalt from damage caused by water seepage and oxidation. It allows the life of the road to be extended between expensive asphalt rehabilitations where the actual pavement is removed and replaced.
Micro-surface product is about 3/8 of an inch thick and is applied directly to the existing asphalt. Once applied to a roadway, it takes approximately two hours to cure before it can be opened up to traffic. Micro-surface turns black as it cures and has a different texture and appearance than new asphalt pavement, similar to but more substantial than an asphalt sealant applied to a driveway.

PAVING PROJECTS - ULTRA-THIN PAVING AND PULVERIZING AND RELAY
Ultra-thin pavement is a thin layer of asphalt pavement, approximately 3/4 of an inch thick, that is overlaid on the existing asphalt. Ultra-thin asphalt pavement is used to provide an additional structural asphalt layer to help protect and weatherproof the underlying asphalt.
Pulverizing and relay projects involve pulverizing the entire thickness of the existing asphalt and placing new asphalt on the roadway. This is completed when the existing asphalt is at the end of its useful life.
ULTRA-THIN PAVING PROJECT AREAS
• Prairie Ridge subdivision (areas not completed during 2013)
• Country Lane subdivision
• 104th Avenue, between 77th Street and Prairie Ridge Blvd
PULVERIZING AND RELAY PROJECT AREAS
• 86th Street
• 57th Avenue water tower site
The Village has budgeted $650,000 from the general fund budget for road paving projects during 2014. The projects listed above will be paid for with a combination of dollars from the general fund budget and water utility budget (water tower site). The paving of the water tower site was carried over from the 2013 budget year.
