Work is progressing on the construction of the larger Fire Station #1 north of Village Hall along Springbrook Road. The current Station #1 was constructed in 1967. Since that time, the design of fire vehicles has changed substantially, and the existing apparatus bays have become too small and inadequate to house the larger, lengthier ladder and pumper tanker trucks.
Contractors are currently working to enclose the building before the onset of snow and cold weather. Work on the interior of the building will continue throughout the winter months and is expected to be complete during the spring of 2015. Once the new station is complete, the existing station will be moved to the new building. Following the move, work will begin to repurpose the vacated space on the south side of Village Hall into a public meeting space/auditorium. Minor improvements will also be made to the existing Village Hall auditorium to accommodate Municipal Court operations.
Contractors are also working to complete site work surrounding Village Hall. Site work completed thus far includes the reconstruction/reinforcement of roads that will service the new fire station, the installation of stormwater facilities, improvements to parking areas and sidewalks, and the relocation of the Village Hall driveway entrance to Springbrook Road.
In addition to supporting the construction of the new fire station, the site work is being completed in preparation for upcoming changes to 39th Avenue. Work on 39th Avenue between 97th and 104th Streets is expected to begin in the spring of 2015. This stretch of 39th Avenue will play an integral role in the Village Green Center, a future residential and commercial development located immediately to the west of 39th Avenue.
