COMPOST SITE MOVING TO NEW LOCATION IN EARLY JUNE
MILD WINTER PUTS WORK AHEAD OF SCHEDULE
WHY RELOCATE THE SITE
As part of the 2016 budget, funds were allocated for the construction of an additional storage building at the Prange Municipal Center. The new building will provide indoor storage space for equipment used by the Public Works Department in order to better protect and prolong the life of the equipment. Because the new storage building is being constructed at the current compost site location, crews are working to relocate the site.
Relocating the site will also offer a cost savings that will partially offset a decrease in grant funding from the State for recycling and hazardous waste elimination programs. Relocating the site will eliminate transportation costs for moving compost material and will improve its efficiency for staff and residents. The move will also enable the Village to establish a waste transfer site in the future to consolidate transportation costs by hauling larger loads of garbage to the landfill less often.
PROJECT TIMELINE
Mild winter weather has enabled crews to make more progress on these projects than initially expected. At the current pace, the compost site at 8600 Green Bay Road is expected to close at the end of business on Saturday, June 4, and the new compost site at 8000 128th Street is expected to open at 9:00 a.m. Monday, June 6.
If the timeline changes as the June 6 date approaches, the Village will post the update at the compost site locations and on this website with a follow-up Tweet.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
The new compost site will offer all of the same services available at the current site. The site map attached below can help you navigate the new site, as will staff at the check-in station. The existing compost site will remain open through Saturday, June 4, and the new site will open on Monday, June 6.
Staff would like to thank you for your patience as we find ways to adapt and improve our services to meet the growing needs of our community.
