PLEASANT PRAIRIE VILLAGE BOARD RECOMMENDS SOUTH SIDE PLACEMENT FOR FUTURE SHARED USE PATHWAY ALONG COUNTY HIGHWAY C
On Monday, May 2, 2016, the Pleasant Prairie Village Board passed a resolution recommending to Kenosha County that a future shared use pathway along County Highway C, between River Road and the Prairie Farms Trail, be placed on the south side of the roadway. The recommendation was made in order to promote the safest possible route for bicyclists and pedestrians, eliminating the need for path users to cross the county highway.
During 2010, Pleasant Prairie's Park Commission, Plan Commission and Village Board considered and adopted/approved a 2010 Bicycle and Pedestrian Trails Plan with the goal of guiding the creation of a safe, comprehensive and integrated bicycle and pedestrian trail network that encourages the use of bicycles and walking for commuting, recreation and other trips. The network would consist of a well-connected system of on-street bicycle lanes and off-street shared use pathways that will tie together current and future Village neighborhoods, recreational areas, commercial areas, and employment centers.
Countywide plans call for Pleasant Prairie's bicycle and pedestrian trail system to eventually connect with other trail systems throughout Kenosha County. Construction of the path along County Highway C will connect the Prairie Farms Trail to the Donald Hackbarth Trail and completes a looped connection between Prairie Springs Park and County Highway C. This project is only one step towards creating a comprehensive trail system.
The project is jointly sponsored by Kenosha County and the Wisconsin Department of Transportation. Construction of the pathway is expected to take place during 2018. The Pleasant Prairie Park Commission also recommended the south side route during an April 6 meeting. A meeting to gather public input regarding the placement of the shared use pathway was held during March.
