The Friends of the Pleasant Prairie Parks Foundation (FPPPF) has secured an approximately $20,000 grant from the Smurfit Westrock Foundation to support playground improvements at Prairie Springs Park. Brock Williamson, Pleasant Prairie director of parks and FPPPF board member, collaborated with the Smurfit Westrock Foundation to secure the funding. The grant will help complete fencing around the new play area near the Veterans Memorial and Ball Field Pavilion and install a canopy shade structure to enhance visitors’ comfort.
Representing the Smurfit Westrock Foundation, Mandy Burnette, Director of Corporate Giving and Community Affairs at Smurfit Westrock, said, "We are proud to invest in projects that enhance community spaces and promote outdoor recreation for children of all abilities. We appreciate the dedication of everyone involved in ensuring Prairie Springs Park remains a safe and engaging place for families to enjoy."
Construction at Prairie Springs Park began in late August 2024, and new playground equipment was installed by mid-November 2024. The playground opened for community use shortly thereafter. This spring, a grand opening event is planned to celebrate the new, inclusive play space. The official date for the celebration will be announced through the Village of Pleasant Prairie’s Facebook page, newsletter, and website.
Smurfit Westrock is also planning a volunteer project later this year to support ongoing maintenance. The project will help park staff ensure the new playground remains vibrant and welcoming for the community.
"Smurfit Westrock Foundation's generous support, combined with the efforts of community partners, reinforces the Village’s commitment to investing in safe, accessible, and enjoyable public spaces," said Village Administrator Eric Rindfleisch. "These enhancements at Prairie Springs Park will benefit the community for years to come, and provide a welcoming space for visitors to enjoy."
